Who is attean in the sign of the beaver?

Attean is a young Penobscot boy in "The Sign of the Beaver." He initially encounters Matt, the main character, after Matt's leg is injured. Attean teaches Matt essential survival skills, including hunting, fishing, and trapping, and introduces him to the ways of his people.
